Arfield tipped to agree Rangers deal after what pundit 'heard Gerrard say'

Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Scott Arfield to earn a new deal at Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker insisted Arfield still has a lot to offer the squad and will be offered a new contract if he puts in good performances.

The 33-year-old is out of contract at Ibrox at the end of the current campaign in May.

As quoted by the Scottish Sun (November 3), the midfielder revealed he had not heard anything about a new deal.

After starting Rangers’ games against Motherwell and Brondby, Arfield was dropped to the bench for the 4-2 win over Ross County at Ibrox at the weekend.

Steven Gerrard changed all three midfielders with Juninho Bacuna, John Lundstram and Joe Aribo starting against Ross County.

Bacuna grabbed his first goal for the Gers in their convincing win over the Scottish Premiership’s bottom side.

“Arfield can be a good squad player,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I heard Steven Gerrard talking about him ahead of their last away game and he said he can do a good job in those sorts of games.

“You’ve got to wait, it’s only November. I’m sure he can get back in the team, play regularly and still earn a new deal. He’s good enough to get it.”

Arfield has now played 154 times for Rangers across all competitions, scoring 29 goals and providing 18 assists.

The Scotland-born Canada international moved to the Glasgow giants from Burnley on a free transfer in the summer of 2018.

In other news, Rangers could recall an Ibrox player in January after an injury expert’s update.
