Arne Engels is ‘hurt’ as Celtic confession made in new message

Celtic midfielder Arne Engels took to social media to reflect on the pain caused by their Champions League elimination at the hands of Bayern Munich on Tuesday (February 18).

The 21-year-old played the full 90 minutes as the Scottish champions left the Allianz Arena broken-hearted thanks to a late Alphonso Davies equaliser.

Brendan Rodger’s side lost the first leg 2-1 after Nicolas Kuhn saw his goal inside 26 seconds ruled out before goals from former Premier League stars Michael Olise and Harry Kane.

The German winger’s opening goal in the second leg stood, however, and Celtic looked set to take the German giants to extra time.

Davies was in the right place at the right time to send Vincent Kompany’s side through, latching onto Kasper Schmeichel’s parry from Leon Goretzka’s initial header.

Football Insider revealed (February 19) that Celtic have missed out on more than £9million following their Champions League exit.

Celtic crash out of the Champions League as Arne Engels gutted

The youngster has been key for Celtic since joining in a club-record deal in the summer, starting 27 of his 40 games across all competitions, scoring nine goals, and providing ten assists in his 2375 minutes of action.

Engels took to Instagram after the 3-2 aggregate defeat to Bayern to say: “This one hurts. Thank you for standing by us no matter what.”

Celtic’s elimination from the Champions League may not have happened if Engels was awarded a penalty in the first leg like Keith Hackett believes they should have.

Celtic are now able to focus on the Scottish Premier League, sitting 13 points above arch-rivals Rangers in the race for the title.
