Arne Slot’s Anfield future could be saved as Alexander Isak set for Liverpool return

Arne Slot is facing mounting pressure at Anfield, but the Liverpool boss could face massive relief ahead of the end of the season.

Alisson and Jeremie Frimpong both joined the club’s injury list during the international break, though the latter is set to be available when the Reds face Man City in the FA Cup on Saturday, 4 April.

Losing his first-choice goalkeeper is the last thing Slot would have wanted for the final few games of the season, especially with Champions League qualification far from guaranteed on Merseyside.

Injuries or not, Slot could be sacked by Liverpool just two seasons after being appointed as Jurgen Klopp’s successor, with some huge names being linked with the job on Merseyside.

Alexander Isak must return from injury with a bang

Not all is doom and gloom at Anfield, though, with Alexander Isak on the verge of returning to the first-team set-up after breaking his leg against Tottenham back in December.

The Sweden international was crunched into by Micky van de Ven as he netted the opening goal in North London, with his leg getting caught under the defender in a totally accidental incident.

Sadly, it meant that the striker, who had struggled to find his feet after forcing a move away from Newcastle United, had no chance of rediscovering the form that made him such a favourite at St James’ Park.

That is, until now, with Slot revealing that Isak has returned to first-team training, and also alluding to the centre-forward possibly being on the bench to face Man City this weekend.

Arne Slot has definitely run out of excuses now

With Hugo Ekitike stepping up massively in his absence, it is Slot’s defence that has been the biggest concern on Merseyside, but his return certainly won’t harm the squad.

Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo have failed to offer much on the flanks, so if Ekitike and Isak can work together through the middle, their lack of goals may no longer be an issue.

Mick Brown told Football Insider that Slot is running out of excuses at Anfield, but his star striker’s return to the squad could have come at just the right time, with several important games remaining.

Should the Reds miss out on Champions League qualification, that would almost seal the Dutchman’s fate, but a new-look forward line should shake things up in the last few matches.
