Arsenal have been alerted after Sevilla manager Jorge Sampaoli has said that his talks for a new contract have stalled, according to a report.
The Sun have claimed that Sampaoli is a potential summer replacement for Arsene Wenger as his contract runs out at the end of the season.
Wenger’s future at the Emirates is looking increasingly bleaker with every bad result and there have been many calls for the 67-year-old to end his 21 year stay at the club.
Sevilla welcome Leicester in the Champions League on Wednesday night and before the game the 56-year-old admitted that he is currently taking each day as it comes and is in no rush to extend his stay.
The Chilean’s current deal expires in 2018 but he is also being targeted by Barcelona as Luis Enrique’s job security is not looking great at the moment.
Sampaoli has led his Sevilla side to third place in La Liga – just two points behind Barca.
“We appreciate that they are trying to renew our contracts but to do that while we are in the present is very difficult,” said Sampaoli, as quoted by the Sun.
“We only want to live in the moment.
“The way we work is like this and there are many reasons to appreciate the present.”
“This is the most important game for Sevilla, we want to be one of the best eight teams in Europe and that’s more important than thinking about the future.”
Sampaoli managed the Chilean national side between 2012 and 2016. He lifted the Copa America in 2015 and was named on the shortlist for the 2015 FIFA coach of the year award before resigning in January 2016.
He moved to Spain in his first job away from South America in June 2016 when he replaced Unai Emery at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium as he left to take charge at Paris St. Germain.
Football Insider Verdict
If Wenger was to leave the Emirates at the end of the season, the club could do a lot worse than Sampaoli. Any manager who is on the radar of Barcelona is definitely one that is worth a risk on. Bringing in the Chilean may also secure the future of Alexis Sanchez as the pair lifted the Copa America together in 2015.
The Sevilla bosses’ football ideology is a lot different to Wenger’s though. He likes a more open game with a team built around a solid defence and more physical players – the man has turned former Stoke player Steven N’Zonzi into one of Europe’s best defensive midfielders.
Sampaoli would definitely be a good replacement for Wenger as he seems to bring success everywhere he goes.
