Arsenal could sign ‘better’ and ‘cheaper’ Dominic Calvert-Lewin alternative after source’s update – expert

Arsenal are right to end their interest in signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Gunners and Everton favourite, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Mikel Arteta’s side “cannot afford to be buying players out of form” like the 25-year-old.

Arsenal are firmly in the market for a top-class centre-forward in the next transfer window.

However, a source with knowledge of their recruitment plans told Football Insider (2 April) that the club are cooling their interest in Calvert-Lewin.

They are worried about the striker’s injury record and his struggles in the second half of this season.

Campbell predicts Arsenal will be able to sign a striker better than Calvert-Lewin at a “cheaper” price.

“Calvert-Lewin has to get himself going for Everton before thinking about transfers,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“This season has been such a difficult one for him. He’s been back for a little while now and you can see that he is not quite right.

“Arsenal cannot afford to be buying players who are out of form who cost huge amounts of money. We have to buy players who are ready to make an impact straight away. Players that are right on it.

“I’m not saying Calvert-Lewin isn’t good but I’m sure there are better strikers out there that Arsenal could sign for cheaper as well. So I think that is the road they will go down.”
