Report: PL rivals plot surprise swoop for Arsenal star as Wenger ready to do business
Chelsea are toying with the possibility of making a last-ditch attempt to sign Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud if they fail to land Edin Dzeko, according to a report.
The Mirror believes that should Dzeko remain at AS Roma, the Blues will turn their attentions in the direction of the Gunners attacker as they hunt for a player who can hold the ball up.
It was thought that the 31-year-old was being used in a cash + player swap deal that would see Borussia Dortmund winger Pierre Emerick Aubameyang head to the Emirates, while Giroud went in the opposite direction.
However, if that doesn’t come off then a move for Giroud to Chelsea could free up the extra cash needed to complete the deal.
John Cross from the Mirror added an update on twitter that said, “Arsenal prepared to do business on Giroud” in a sign that his days at the Emirates might be numbered.
Arsenal prepared to do business on Giroud. Player-plus-cash deal involving Aubameyang the obvious fit but if that doesn't work and Giroud wants to go, maybe another Prem team… Good player and good pro Giroud. Never once kicked off. https://t.co/nX2HkJDbnR

The Gunners have up until now signed Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Manchester United and Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos during the transfer window while allowing Alexis Sanchez get his move away from the club.
Football Insider verdict:
Typical Arsenal. Another major deal dragging on when it looked like it would go through with a simple bid. Now it looks like the Aubameyang deal hinges on Giroud, either in a swap deal or, if that doesn’t work out, a move to another side for the cash that will allow Wenger to seal his striker move. The question Arsenal fans will be asking though, is that Arsenal are a rich club. They’ll be furious that once again Wenger won’t just pay the cash and get their man.
