Arsenal fans react on Twitter to Holding display v Basel

By Dominic Toner

Arsenal youngster Rob Holding played 90 minutes against Basel on Tuesday night – and the club’s supporters were thrilled with his performance on Twitter.

The Gunners completed a comfortable 4-1 away victory against the Swiss side and have qualified as group leaders for the Champions League knockout rounds, with Paris Saint-Germain only managing a draw against Ludogorets.

Lucas Perez made the most of a rare start in the team with a hat-trick and Alex Iwobi also got on the scoresheet.

Holding looked assured alongside centre-back Laurent Koscielny in his first ever Champions League game.

The 21-year-old was dispossessed late on by Seydou Doumbi and he capitalised to score a consolation goal, but he will be pleased overall.

Arsenal completed the signing of Holding in the summer from Bolton and he has now made seven appearances this season.

The England Under-21 international is competing for a place alongside experienced players in Koscielny, Gabriel, Per Mertesacker and Shkodran Mustafi.

Gunners manager Wenger has always been keen on developing youngsters and Holding could be the next star to emerge.

The centre-back is extremely composed in possession, something which is crucial to an Arsenal team, and has also showed great defensive awareness already.

Holding has only made 38 senior appearances during his career during spells at Arsenal, Bolton and Bury, but is already beginning to show all the signs of becoming a top defender.

In other Arsenal news, Wenger means business is one of the things learned from the win against Basel.
