Arsenal have assets to sell as Mikel Arteta’s transfer plans speculated by Keith Wyness

Arsenal will only be looking to make minor changes to their squad in the summer transfer window, according to Keith Wyness.

The former Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, thinks Arsenal could end the upcoming summer window with a negative net spend.

The Gunners are expected to sell a star player in the summer transfer window, with captain Martin Odegaard among those who could depart.

Arsenal have invested heavily in their squad under Mikel Arteta with the aim of winning the Premier League title for the first time since the 2003-04 season.

Transfer plans are underway at Arsenal ahead of next season, with Arteta still keen to strengthen his squad even if it means sales have to be made.

Arsenal ‘prepared to repay good performances’ with new deals

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Arsenal have the potential to do some player trading in the summer.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks Arteta will be looking closely at which players can handle the pressure of the Premier League title race between now and the end of the season.

Man City (A)Arsenal (H)
Newcastle (H)Burnley (A)

Arsenal and Manchester City’s next four Premier League fixtures in the title race.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think the squad needs tweaking more than anything else.

“I think the basics are there. I think there’s a solid investment in that squad. They’ve also got chances to do some trading and so the net spend should be pretty low because I think they’ve got assets that they can sell as well.

“It’ll be tweaking. They’ll know themselves which players are responding to the pressure and which ones are turning up and really doing it.

“And so that will be a big factor because they’re all playing for their places in a very good squad, and they’re also showing that they’re prepared to repay good performances with longer-term, better contracts right now as well.

“We’ve just seen a few of those handed out and so there may be some tweaking, but, as I say, overall, the net spend now isn’t going to be that big. And in fact, it may even be a negative net spend.

“And they may want to just tweak a couple of positions in terms of age profile, things like that. But overall, they’ve got a pretty healthy investment in their squad right now that can be traded.”

Arsenal encounter issue in Julian Alvarez pursuit

Arsenal are unlikely to be able to sign Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez in the summer due to a permit issue, according to former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson talking to Football Insider.

Alvarez may not have a desire to return to the Premier League, where he previously spent two seasons at Man City, due to being unable to get visas for all his family to live in England.

Player sales could also dictate whether Arsenal could spend big to bring Alvarez to the club, with striker Gabriel Jesus potentially being allowed to leave.
