Kieran Maguire: Arsenal have ‘lost £300m’ as FFP authorities now on high alert

Arsenal have missed out on £300million worth of revenue as a result of their failure to qualify for the Champions League in recent years.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Gunnes’ Financial Fair Play status.

Uefa’s FFP rules allow clubs to lose approximately £25million over a rolling three-year period, although a new revenue-based system is set to be phased in from next season.

The Times reported on Monday (22 August) that Arsenal are now one of 20 clubs on Uefa’s FFP watchlist.

Mikel Arteta’s side narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification in 2021-22, meaning they have now not featured in the competition since 2016-17.

But they have still managed to spend north of £100m on new signings in four of the last six seasons, and their net spend in that period is in the red by around £350m.

Maguire claimed that they may now have to rein in their spending with Uefa breathing down their necks.

If we use a traffic light system, this is effectively saying Arsenal are on amber,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

It just means that Arsenal cannot spend to the same extent as we have seen with the likes of Chelsea.

Failure to qualify for the Champions League for the past six seasons has probably cost them around £300m.

They have addressed that in one way with their wage bill. They have managed to get the likes of Ozil and Aubamayang off it, which will have helped.

They have got to tread carefully rather than spend wildly like we have seen at other clubs.
