Arsenal idol fumes as controversial Gabriel Jesus picture analysed
Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus was robbed of a penalty at Southampton on Sunday, according to Kevin Campbell.
The former Gunners and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 25-year-old would have been awarded a spot-kick had different officials been on duty.
Jesus went to ground under intense pressure from Saints defender Duje Caleta-Car in the first half of Arsenal’s 1-1 draw at St. Mary’s on Sunday (23 October).
As pictured by talkSPORT, Caleta-Car had his arms around Jesus but referee Robert Jones did not adjudge the contact as being sufficient of a penalty.
VAR official Peter Bankes chose against intervening on the incident.
When asked by Football Insider if the officials came to the correct decision, Campbell said: “Look, the defender is the wrong side of Jesus.
“That should tell you everything. The defender is the wrong side and he impedes the striker. That is it. It is a foul.
“If that was outside the box the referee would have given it. Why should he not give it when it is inside the box? That incident is a penalty.

“It wasn’t given though. Sometimes you get the rub of the green and sometimes you don’t.
“The truth of the matter is, I do not know what a penalty is anymore. I do not see the difference between that challenge and other challenges where penalties were given. I guess it comes down to the referee.”
