Arsenal idol issues emphatic Kieran Tierney claim after early team news

Kevin Campbell has suggested Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney may be best suited for the trip to Man United on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners and Everton striker said there will be times when a “traditional full-back” is needed for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Oleksandr Zinchenko impressed in the opening three games of the Premier League campaign before sustaining a knee injury.

Tierney has replaced the Ukraine international for wins over Fulham and Aston Villa.

Speaking to club media (2 September), Arteta revealed Zinchenko has not trained with the team ahead of Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford.

When asked by Football Insider if Tierney was ready for the challenge posed by Man United’s Antony and Jadon Sancho, Campbell said: “I knew there would be times where Kieran Tierney would play.

“There is times when traditional full-backs are needed, 100 per cent.

“Zinchenko brings more to the table than Kieran Tierney because he can sit in the midfield beside Thomas Partey. That allows the likes of Ben White to bomb on. I have never seen Ben White this attacking, especially against Bournemouth.

“Tierney has done well since being back in the team though. He is more than capable of replacing Zinchenko even though he is a different kind of player.”

Tierney has made five appearances for Arsenal this season.

He has four years remaining on his contract at Emirates.
