Arsenal idol issues 'huge' Lisandro Martinez claim after journalist's bid update

Kevin Campbell has urged Arsenal to do their upmost to get a deal for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez over the line.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners and Everton striker said the 24-year-old would make “a huge difference” as he can “play four positions to a high level.”

As reported by Fabrizio Romano (27 June), Arsenal have submitted a £34.5million bid for Martinez including add-ons.

Mikel Arteta’s side have already had one bid for the Argentina international turned down this summer.

Ajax are said to want around £43million for their left-footed defender.

Martinez has three years remaining on his contract at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.

When asked by Football Insider if Arsenal needed Martinez given William Saliba has returned from his loan spell at Marseille, Campbell said: “Yes, we need a player like that.

“Martinez is a player who can play in multiple positions as well as anybody. He can probably play four positions to a high level.

“He is very tenacious and is a good technician. That makes a huge difference.

“We have seen that when Arsenal have injuries, the players who come in have not been up to standard. They just haven’t.

“It is nice to see Arsenal going for players like Martinez who could make a difference.

“The key is, they have to sign them. It is not enough to be interested in them. We need to sign them.”
