Arsenal news: Campbell ‘100 per cent’ sure on next captain after Mikel Arteta reveal

Kieran Trippier will be named the new captain of Arsenal in the summer.

That is the view of former Gunners and Everton striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the upcoming vacancy in Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Alexandre Lacazette is Arsenal’s current captain having assumed the role from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang earlier in the season.

However, Lacazette is expected to leave the Emirates at the expiration of his contract on 30 June.

As quoted by the Guardian (23 February), Mikel Arteta revealed a decision will be made on the next captain in the summer.

He added that too much is being made of the uncertainty surrounding the next captain of the club.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the situation, Campbell said:

“The captain’s armband has gone to Kieran Tierney when Lacazette has gone off. I think it’s quite clear that Tierney is the vice captain now and so he should be. I believe he is the right man for the job.

“When Lacazette leaves at the end of the season I expect Tierney to be named the captain, 100 per cent.

“Maybe [Martin] Odegaard will be his vice-captain after that. Odegaard will not be the main captain but I think he’ll be part of the leadership group.”

Tierney has taken the armband when Lacazette has been substituted in recent weeks.

Arsenal travel to Watford on Sunday.
