Arsenal star Mohamed Elneny expected to miss ‘rest of the season’ – expert

Mikel Arteta identified the Arsenal midfield as a “fragile” part of his squad after Mohamed Elneny underwent surgery last month.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

Arsenal confirmed last week that 30-year-old midfielder Elneny will be out for an “extended period of time” after undergoing surgery on a knee issue.

The Egyptian international is now expected to be out for a large part of the season, leaving Arsenal short of options in midfield for their Premier League title push.

As a result, Arteta moved quickly in January to sign Jorginho from rivals Chelsea.

Dinnery labelled the Jorginho transfer “wise” after finding out that Elneny could be out for months and might not play again this season.

It looks as though Elneny is facing a severe injury at Arsenal, Dinnery told Football Insider.

We’re certainly talking months on the sidelines instead of weeks with this one.

I understand that it is very touch-and-go whether Elneny will even play again this season.

The arrival of Jorginho in January is a good indicator that Mikel Arteta feels vulnerable and fragile in those positions.

Arsenal

Arsenal will be very worried about that midfield area, with Thomas Partey not boasting the best injury record either.

It was a wise move to bring somebody in to just offer cover and quality in case Arsenal are hit with more key injuries.
