Arsenal news: Medical expert fears 'significant setback' could derail Thomas Partey's pre-season

Arsenal star Thomas Partey could miss the start of pre-season if he suffers another setback in his recovery from injury.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Partey, 28, has not featured since he was forced off with a thigh problem in the 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace last month (4 April).

As quoted by The Sun last Friday (29 April), Mikel Arteta revealed that the Ghanaian midfielder is not likely to return this season.

And Dinnery suggests that the manager is right to be cautious as one setback could derail Partey’s pre-season preparations.

“It’s always good to have targets and goals,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“They will hope they don’t need him to get them over the line with Champions League qualification. It’s about managing the situation well.

“If you rush him back, that could follow through to pre-season and then ultimately next season. It’s all about risk and reward.

“Given that he has suffered this type of injury before, this is a significant setback. We are looking at several weeks on the sidelines.

“If he was to suffer a recurrence of the injury, that would extend the timeline.

“Given that it is a World Cup year which has pushed pre-season forward, he could conceivably miss pre-season if he’s rushed back and suffers a setback.”

Dinnery told this site last month that “mental stress” may have played a part in Partey’s injury.

He has registered two goals and one assist in 26 appearances for the Champions League-chasing Gunners this term.
