Arsenal summer signing wants to emulate 374-game club legend

Granit Xhaka has picked out Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira as his idol, as he hailed the influence of the club’s former captain.

Midfielder Xhaka signed during the summer transfer window for a fee of £30 million, and the 23-year-old defensive midfielder revealed he used to watch the English Premier League on TV.

Talking on the official Premier League website, Xhaka said there were a lot of players that influenced him growing up, but picked out Viera as his number one .

“It’s always been a dream of mine to play in the Premier League. I always used to watch the games on TV and if I really had to pick one, it would be Patrick Vieira.

“He is an idol, a role model, especially here at Arsenal. He was also a world-class player for his national team and he played in the same position as me, so I would pick him.”

Former France international Vieira made 374 appearances for the Gunners, including captaining the north London club in the famous ‘invincibles’ side of 2003/04.

Xhaka has made three appearances for manager Arsene Wenger this season, as the Switzerland international looks to stamp his authority on the Premier League.

The Gunners take on Southampton next in the Premier League, on Saturday afternoon at the Emirates.
