Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori has left the Italy camp to return to London following his freak injury.

Sources have told Football Insider that Arsenal’s medical team will assess the 22-year-old so the club can get a full picture of the situation ahead of the north London derby this weekend.

Calafiori suffered a freak knock during Italy’s 3-1 win against France as Ousmane Dembele landed on the back of his calf after a tackle from Alessandro Bastoni.

The situation was an accident, but it led to the Arsenal man being stretchered off the pitch.

It has led to concern among Arsenal fans, and he has now left international duty early to focus on the next stage of his rehabilitation.

However, there are doubts over whether or not he will be medically cleared to feature against Tottenham on Sunday (15 September).

Arsenal will want Riccardo Calafiori back as soon as possible

Although the Italy international has yet to start a game for the Gunners, Mikel Arteta will still want his new signing as an option as soon as possible.

The Premier League giants signed Calafiori for £42million from Bologna as Arteta bolstered his defensive options.

He has made two appearances in the Premier League since joining the club, coming on from the bench.

The Gunners have made an undefeated start to the season with two victories and one draw.

Arsenal are already trailing the defending Premier League champions, Man City, by two points.
