Arsenal tipped to accept £25m Pepe offer - pundit

Arsenal should seek a “clean break” with “really disappointing” winger Nicolas Pepe, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted a fee of around £25million could be enough to prise the 26-year-old away from north London.

As quoted by the Athletic (November 27th), Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta claimed Pepe will not be leaving in the January window – insisting that now “is not the moment” to speak about the winger’s future.

The Ivory Coast international has failed to appear off the bench in the last three Gunners fixtures.

Emile Smith-Rowe and Bukayo Saka are now permanent fixtures on the flanks for the north London side.

Pepe has scored once in nine Arsenal appearances this season.

Whelan suggested the former Lille winger has struggled to adapt to the “toughest league in the world”.

“He’s been really disappointing at Arsenal, for me,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He came in with big hopes, promised to be a really exciting player but he just hasn’t really shown it at all.

“Doing it in France is one thing but doing it in the Premier League is completely different. It’s the toughest league in the world.

“He’ll be the first one to say it’s not worked out. I think around £25million is probably around the right amount to get him out with a clean break – that would be good for all parties.”

Pepe joined Arsenal in 2019 for a reported club-record fee of £72million.

The winger has scored 25 goals in 98 games for the Gunners.
