Expert: Arsenal to complete 'pivotal' hire after 'huge' Laura Andrews update

Arsenal have a “pivotal” role to fill after the departure of first-team nutritionist Laura Andrews.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

As relayed by Training Ground Guru last Monday (6 June), Andrews has left the club alongside head of performance Simon Austin.

Andrews joined the Gunners’ academy setup from Queens Park Rangers in November 2019 before being promoted in September the following year.

Dinnery emphasised the scope of Andrews’ role and how vital it is for Arsenal to choose the right candidate as her replacement.

This role within elite-level sport has become so pivotal,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“If you want to compete at the highest level, you need to ensure you are doing things to optimise performance. In that recovery period, with two or three games a week, nutrition will help with that.

“Maintaining health in the wider scheme is important too. The demands on the body leave players a little bit more susceptible to wider issues. So, you have to be a lot more careful with what you’re putting into your body.

“The analogy is fuel and a motor vehicle. You can only get out what you put in. If it’s good quality stuff, you put yourself in the best position to reap the rewards of that.

“Players may only spend a small percentage of their time within their clubs. It’s about educating players in terms of what they need to do away from the club.

“There’s a lot of nuance. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. The demands that Ramsdale will have are different to what Saka might need.

“Dietary changes can help reduce injury risk as well. There are a lot high-profile advocates of veganism, for example. Tweaks in your diet can eliminate issues that are causing an inflammatory response.

“There are also issues around hydration. So as you can see, the role is huge.”
