Arsenal told to sanction Nuno Tavares exit after journalist’s update – pundit

Alan Hutton has claimed Arsenal should get Nuno Tavares “off the wage bill” and let him leave the club this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Tottenham and Aston Villa defender said that Mikel Arteta will be looking to “free up space” after strengthening the squad this summer.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano (22 July), Atalanta are leading the race to sign the 22-year-old on loan.

Talks between Atalanta and the London club are ongoing.

Brighton are also said to have expressed their interest in the left-back.

The defender has three years remaining on his contract at the Emirates, with the option of a further year.

When asked if he thought the Gunners could let Tavares leave, Hutton told Football Insider‘s Charlotte Cohen:

I think Arsenal have strengthened very well so I think with that then comes trying to move people on.

He was on the periphery, definitely on the fringes. For me he wasn’t a nailed on starter or anything like that.

You look at the likes of [Oleksandr] Zinchenko and others who have come in. Obviously Arteta will be looking to free up space, especially on the wage bill.

“So I think it’s good for Arsenal to move players on that have done a decent job but who, in the future, aren’t going to be a first XI player.

So I think that’s probably a good move.
