Ashley can transform opinion at Newcastle if reported transfer boost comes true

While Newcastle United fans are never far from having something new to complain about, there is one topic which will remain as contentious as it has for the last five years; Mike Ashley.

The British businessman does not so much divide opinion as has nearly all the Toon Army baying for blood, and his decisions while on Tyneside have only dug his hole deeper and deeper.

Those from outside Tyneside look on and see a club being run on a shoestring budget, but with a decent squad and a top class manager, and insist the supporters are demanding more than what they should expect.

In reality though, the crux of the issue is a simple lack of ambition, and unfortunately for the fans it has continued into the current campaign.

The Toon Army might not be happy with the way the club has been run but all those decisions would be left to rest if Ashley showed any sign of pushing forward and giving Rafael Benitez something to work with, especially in terms of a transfer budget.

However while the likes of Brighton and Huddersfield, the two other teams promoted from the Championship last season, were boosting their squads with significant additions over the summer, Newcastle brought in just five new faces.

Now though, the Telegraph’s report could transform the opinion of Ashley if it comes true.

It is said that Benitez is to be handed a bigger transfer kitty than he has been offered this season, which would not only help boost first team reinforcements but would go a long way to keeping to Spaniard on Tyneside as he enters the final year of his contract.

The Sports Direct supremo would have to give him massive amounts of money to completely get the Toon Army back on side, but he can at least transform the wrath currently shown into apathy by demonstrating a desire to push on.
