Ashley Cole makes big claim about Tottenham

By Harry Sykes

Ashley Cole has warned Chelsea that Tottenham could derail their title bid in the new year.

The west London club stepped up their title charge on Saturday when they beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at Selhurst Park.

It maintained Chelsea’s stunning run of results, which has seen them win 11 Premier League matches on the trot and be installed as favourites to win the title.

Former Chelsea defender Cole has been impressed by what he’s seen from Antonio Conte’s side in recent months but warned that their trip to Tottenham on 4 January could prove their biggest test of the season so far.

Speaking to Sky Sports 1’s live coverage after Chelsea’s win over Palace, Cole said: “Going to Spurs will be difficult. If there is any team that could stop them at home, it could be Spurs.

“The hunger and desire that Chelsea will have going there to get that [Arsenal] record… they’re unstoppable at the minute.”

Cole was referring to Arsenal’s Premier League record of 13 consecutive wins, which Chelsea could beat at White Hart Lane if they follow up victories against Bournemouth and Stoke with what would be a landmark triumph at the home of their bitter rivals.

The former England international’s belief in fifth-placed Spurs is especially notable given that they lost 2-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge just three weekends ago.

Chelsea, who finished a lowly 10th last season after winning the 2014-15 title, are nine points clear at the top of the league with a haul of 43 points.

The club’s closest contenders are second-placed Liverpool, who have a testing trip to Merseyside rivals Everton on Monday night.

Arsenal, who are in third, travel to Manchester City on Sunday.

In other Tottenham news, fans have reacted after the club agreed the terms of a 21-year-old move in January.
