Ashley Young sends message as police action revealed after Liverpool bust-up

Ashley Young took to social media to celebrate Everton’s febrile 2-2 draw with arch-rivals Liverpool on Wednesday (February 12).

The 39-year-old came off the bench for the last few minutes as Everton snatched a dramatic late equaliser in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park amid extraordinary scenes.

Beto opened the scoring after just 11 minutes thanks to a clever free-kick routine from the home side before Alexis Mac Allister restored parity five minutes later with a close-range header.

Talismanic forward Mohamed Salah gave Arne Slot’s side the lead in the 73rd minute and Liverpool looked set to go nine points clear of second-placed Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.

The current league leaders then failed to clear their lines after a hopeful ball from full-back Vitalii Mykolenko eventually fell to James Tarkowski, allowing him to smash the ball past Alisson in the Liverpool goal

A scuffle broke out between the two sets of players after the final whistle when Curtis Jones confronted Abdoulaye Doucoure for celebrating in front of the Liverpool fans.

Michael Oliver responded by sending both players off with both clubs likely to face charges for failing to control their players.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official Keith Hackett believes the police will likely get involved after missiles were thrown by fans into the two sets of fighting players.

Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff were then shown a red by Oliver after seemingly saying something to the referee while shaking his hand and will now be in the stands for Liverpool’s games against Wolves and Aston Villa.

The veteran full-back remains an important player for Everton, starting 18 of his 25 games across all competitions, scoring one goal, and providing three assists in his 1652 minutes of action.

Young was notably unable to play against his son Tyler in Everton’s 2-0 FA Cup win over Peterborough after Darren Ferguson refused to bring him off the bench.

He took to Instagram after the draw with Liverpool to say: “Let’s just take a minute. The last derby at Goodison Park had it all and rightly so especially for you fans! Togetherness we go until the last whistle, we will stick together through everything. UTFT.”

David Moyes has overseen an impressive turnaround since replacing Sean Dyche earlier in the season, winning three, drawing one, and losing two of his six games at the helm.

Everton will travel to Crystal Palace for their next Premier League game on Saturday (February 15) as they seek to put further distance between themselves and the relegation zone.
