Dean Saunders has made a huge claim by saying that Aston Villa are bigger than Everton – and fans on Twitter of both clubs have provided mixed views.
Former Villa striker Saunders also claimed that the Championship club are bigger than the Premier League trio of Tottenham, Manchester City and Chelsea – all fighting to finish in the top four this season.
Villa suffered their first relegation in nearly three decades last term, an alarming drop for a team that was competing with the above sides for a Champions League spot seven years ago.
Saunders highlighted this point when he made his comments when talking about Villa’s recent fall.
“Villa are bigger than Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham and Everton,” Saunders told BBC Sport.
“Compare them to Tottenham, who were trying to break into the Champions League at the same time as O’Neill was in charge, or Everton, who are trying to do it now – there is no difference in the size of those clubs. Villa are actually bigger than both of them.”
Everton fans didn’t take too kindly to Saunders’ comments, but there is no surprise that the Villa Park faithful agreed with their former player.
One fan called the TV pundit a clown, while other Toffees supporters just laughed at his comments.
Furthermore, there were a number of Villa fans that believe Saunders is only speaking the truth and that his claims are correct.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
