Aston Villa backed to seal 'perfect' Ward-Prowse signing amid Guardiola claim - Robinson

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse would be a “great” signing for Aston Villa summer, according to Paul Robinson.

The former Spurs and England goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Dean Smith needs to add another centre-midfielder to his squad this summer and said Ward-Prowse, 26, would be “perfect”.

According to the Guardian, the Claret and Blues have set their sights on signing Southampton’s captain in the upcoming transfer window.

However, the Daily Mail report that the Saints have no intention of sanctioning an exit for their centre-midfielder who narrowly missed out on England 26-man squad for the Euros.

Ward-Prowse was one of Southampton’s standout player last season, with eight goals and seven assists in 38 Premier League games.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of Ward-Prowse’s future, Robinson said: “Villa need another centre-midfielder.

“They need reinforcements.

“I would be surprised if Southampton allowed Ward-Prowse to go but if they do, he will be wanted throughout the Premier League. If Villa can get him then I am sure they will.

“He is the perfect fit for the way that Villa play. They are light in the midfield and he could fill the gap.

“His delivery for the likes of Watkins on corners and free-kicks would be fantastic. It would be a great bit of business if they can get that one over the line.”

Ward-Prowse is famed for his set-piece ability.

Pep Guardiola told the BBC in December: “They [Southampton] have the best free-kick taker I have seen in my life in Ward-Prowse.”
