Aston Villa backed to sign Diego Carlos replacement after source’s reveal – pundit

Kevin Campbell has tipped Aston Villa to sign a centre-back to replace the injured Diego Carlos.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Arsenal and Everton striker admitted Carlos’ premature end to the season was “sad”.

Aston Villa announced on Monday (15 August) that the 29-year-old had ruptured his Achilles tendon and will undergo surgery.

A club source told Football Insider earlier this week (16 August) that he will miss the rest of the season with the injury.

It is understood it may prompt the club to act in the transfer market to bolster their defensive ranks.

“Look, I thought Diego Carlos was excellent on Saturday.

“I’ve seen him play when he was at Sevilla and thought he was a really good signing. He’s got the speed as well, the aggression to clean things up.

“When things got desperate towards the end he’s done his ankle. It’s sad news for Villa because he was a key piece, I thought him and [Tyrone] Mings were quite good on Saturday.

“[Ezri] Konsa’s a decent player and [Calum] Chambers is there as well but he can play other positions and I think Steven Gerrard wants him to be a utility player.

“Maybe, Aston Villa go into the transfer market and get someone else.

“I think they’ve got some players but I don’t think Steven Gerrard is fully convinced on some of them so I think there might need to go into the transfer market again.”

As well as Konsa, Mings and Chambers, Kortney Hause is also still on the club’s books but is also nursing an injury.

Villa are next in action on Saturday (20 August) when they travel to Crystal Palace.

In other news, a finance guru has issued a “£105million” Aston Villa transfer claim as new funds are secured.
