Chief executive Keith Wyness has claimed “promotion” is what he expects from Aston Villa next season and confidently predicted it will happen.
Villa didn’t enjoy their first season back in the Championship as they finished in 13th position, 18 points adrift of the playoff places.
The campaign started off in the worst possible way as Villa only managed one victory in the opening 12 matches and new manager Roberto di Matteo was sacked following a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Preston North End at the start of October.
Former Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce was appointed the new manager and although the results improved, his side rarely looked capable of finishing in the top six.
Speaking on the club’s official website, CEO Wyness sent out a positive message to the Villa fans concerning the club’s ambitions for next season.
He stated: “There’s only one word: promotion. That’s it. That’s all I want and that’s all we’re focused on.
“Everybody at this club is going to do their bit to help us win every Saturday and every Tuesday or Wednesday.
“But we’re going to do it next year, I’m convinced.”
Teams such as Sunderland, Hull City and Middlesborough will join Aston Villa in the Championship next season so achieving promotion is going to be a very hard task.
However, Steve Bruce appears to be the perfect man for the job because he’s achieved promotion to the Premier League with Birmingham City on two separate occasions and he led Hull City to the English top flight twice.
