Aston Villa could appoint Mauricio Pochettino after source’s sack reveal – pundit

Kevin Campbell has insisted Aston Villa have the pull to appoint Graham Potter or Mauricio Pochettino as their next manager.

The former Arsenal striker was speaking exclusively to Football Insider in the wake of uncertainty surrounding the future of Steven Gerrard at Villa Park.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (29 August) that Gerrard’s position as manager is far from secure and the club’s ambitious American owners won’t hesitate to sack him if results do not improve.

A source told this site that Villa chiefs are lining up Graham Potter and Pochettino as potential replacements should the Liverpool icon depart.

Gerrard, who succeeded Dean Smith last November, has led his side to nine losses in their last 14 Premier League games.

Pochettino departed giants Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season after an underwhelming spell in the Parc des Princes hotseat.

Campbell suggested Villa’s finances, facilities, and squad could play a major part in attracting a new boss should Gerrard get the axe.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Villa are a huge club.

“They’ve got money to spend, they’ve got the facilities, and they’ve got a very good squad.

“Graham Potter and Pochettino have done a fantastic job at their respective clubs.

“Do Villa have the pull to get them in? Of course they do.”

Potter achieved a ninth-place finish with Brighton last term and has been linked with the Tottenham and England jobs in the past.

Pochettino reached the Champions League final with Tottenham in 2019.
