Kieran Maguire issues double-your-money Aston Villa claim after £100m news

Aston Villa could double their matchday once their stadium redevelopment is complete.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Villa’s plans to add another 7,000 seats to Villa Park.

The club announced the ambitious re-design project of both the stadium and surrounding site on Tuesday (28 June).

Birmingham Live reported the same day that the project will cost in the region of £100million.

Maguire forecasts that Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris will be looking for a healthy return on their investment.

“I think the problem with Villa is that they have had relatively low matchday income,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“If we look at the most recent season in the Premier League when there were full crowds, they only generated £13m from matchday. Then you have clubs like Man United and Spurs who are in the region of £110 and £120m.

“They have to aim to bridge that gap or it puts them in an impossible situation from an FFP perspective.

“How much more can they get? If it’s going to cost them £100m, they really need to be making a return of 15 to 20 per cent on that.

So, they should be able to double their matchday income.

“I think we’ll see a significant upgrade in terms of their hospitality offering. If they price it right and get the product right then, even in a recession, you will get people willing to take up the offer.”
