Aston Villa could land £30m boost as clubs rally for rule change – sources
Multiple Premier League sides have shown support for a PSR rule change that would provide Aston Villa with more financial flexibility, sources have told Football Insider.
Ahead of the Premier League’s annual general meeting this summer, Crystal Palace proposed a rule change to increase the losses allowed under PSR for clubs competing in Europe to counteract Uefa’s coefficient system.
Uefa currently rewards teams who have performed well in Europe over the past 10 years with a higher payout of prize money.
For example, Manchester City currently rank first in Uefa’s coefficient table following their Champions League triumph in 2023.
As a result, City pocketed £28million from Uefa for qualifying in 2023-24 while Newcastle United earned just £4million for their qualification.
New Premier League vote could give Aston Villa £30m PSR boost
Villa qualified for the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history this season meaning they are set to earn a tiny fraction of coefficient money compared to their Premier League peers.
However, Palace’s proposal aims to alter PSR to allow clubs to claim the difference in coefficient funding between themselves and the top club in Europe as allowable losses.
Currently, top-flight clubs can lose a maximum of £105million over a rolling three-year period under PSR.
As reported by The Times, introducing the new rules would allow Villa an extra £30million in allowable losses.

Sources have told Football Insider that the proposal is quickly growing in support with multiple Premier League clubs in favour of the change.
Palace’s proposal is separate from Villa’s appeal to increase PSR allowable losses from £105million to £135million – which would impact all Premier League clubs as opposed to only those competing in Uefa competitions.
