Aston Villa could pull plug on Nico Williams deal after signing completed – sources

Aston Villa continue to keep tabs on Athletic Bilbao sensation Nico Williams – but could find it too hard to do a deal this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The Midlands giants are long-term admirers of Williams, 21, following his impressive performances in La Liga – with Spanish boss Unai Emery a big fan of the winger’s talents.

However, it is believed that the signing of Morgan Rogers from Middlesbrough in January has lessened the need for a new winger this summer.

Aston Villa are also close to the fringes of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) – although potential Champions League qualification could alleviate those fears.

Williams will be available this summer via a release clause worth €50million (£43million) in his Athletic contract, which was renewed in December 2023.

Chelsea make first move for long-term Aston Villa target Williams

Football Insider revealed on Monday (8 April) that Chelsea have moved to steal a march on their rivals and seal a deal for the Spain international before the window opens.

The Blues are trying to set up a deal for the winger, who helped end Athletic’s 40-year trophy drought as the Basque club lifted the Copa del Rey on Saturday (6 April).

Williams has notched six goals and 14 assists in 30 appearances across all competitions this term.

He has notched the joint-second-most (eight) assists of any La Liga player this season.

As per FotMob, the 21-year-old is also among the leaders in the Spanish top flight for penalties won, successful dribbles, chances created and cross accuracy this term.

The winger, who can play on the left and right, made his senior Spain debut in September 2022 and has gone on to score twice in 13 total caps for his country.
