'Huge for Villa' - Exclusive: Campbell reacts to Athletic's Barkley update

Ross Barkley has made a “huge difference” to Aston Villa and will be sorely missed while injured, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the 26-year-old is “tailor-made” for Dean Smith’s side.

Barkley has enjoyed a sensational start to his Villa career, playing a key role in wins over Liverpool, Leicester and Arsenal since his arrival on loan from Chelsea.

However, in Saturday’s 2-1 loss at home to Brighton the 33-times England international was forced off with a hamstring injury which will definitely rule him out of Monday night’s trip to West Ham.

The Athletic report that the attacking midfielder is likely to be sidelined for weeks but not months – Villa also play Newcastle, Wolves, Burnley and West Brom before Christmas.

When asked by Football Insider if he feared for the Claret and Blue in the absence of Barkley, Campbell said:

“Ross Barkley is tailor-made for Aston Villa, especially with Jack Grealish on the left and Barkley driving through the middle.

“Barkley has had a good run but he is a player that seems to pick up niggles here and there. It curtails him a bit.

“Dean Smith will try and find a solution while he is absent but I am sure they will want him back as soon as possible because he has made a huge difference to that team.”
