Aston Villa fans hysterical on Twitter as Birmingham sack Rowett and appoint Zola

By Amir Mir

Birmingham City have appointed Gianfranco Zola as their new manager – and Aston Villa supporters on Twitter are laughing at their rivals.

The Blues sacked Gary Rowett on Wednesday morning and appointed Chelsea legend Zola as his replacement just hours later.

This despite Rowett guiding the Midlands club to seventh in the Championship table, following their 2-1 win against Ipswich Town on Tuesday night.

The former Burton Albion boss was a popular figure at St Andrews, having joined the club two years ago, replacing the sacked Lee Clark in the dugout.

He won 42 out of his 106 games in charge and had them on the verge of the play-offs, only sitting outside the top six on goal difference.

Villa fans on Twitter stated that the appointment of Zola is terrible and couldn’t resist mocking their rivals on Twitter.

One supporter even stated that the Blues could perhaps appoint former Villa boss Roberto Di Matteo as one of Zola’s backroom staff.

Overall fans were making fun of their second city rivals for sacking an up and coming manager in Rowett who had been doing wonders at the club.

Villa have already played Birmingham this season when Rowett’s side recorded a 1-1 draw on home soil in late October.

Zola’s first taste of the fiery derby will be in April when the Blues take a small trip across the city to Villa Park.
