'A hugely worrying sign', 'Please spare us' – Aston Villa fans react on Twitter to reported Whelan link

By Matt Farr

Aston Villa have been linked with a move for Stoke City midfielder Glenn Whelan this summer – and fans on Twitter are not convinced.

The Irish Sun claimed on Saturday that the Championship club are confident of striking a deal for the 33-year-old midfielder, as his future at the Bet365 Stadium looks unclear.

Stoke are set to complete the signing of experienced West Brom midfielder Darren Fletcher when the transfer window opens on July 1, and Whelan could lose his place in the first-team.

The Republic of Ireland international made 31 appearances in all competitions last season, and Bruce is prepared to capitalise on his uncertain future by bringing him to Villa Park this summer.

Burnley are also credited with an interest in Whelan, but Villa have entered negotiations with Stoke over a potential fee, and have lined up a potential two-year deal.

However, Aston Villa fans remain unconvinced over the potential arrival of Whelan at the club, despite his Premier League and international pedigree.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Whelan has just one year left to run on his current contract with Stoke, meaning he could be available in a cut-price deal.

Aston Villa currently have no shortage of players in Whelan’s central-midfield position, but Steve Bruce will be attracted to his knowledge and experience to aid their promotion push next term.

In other Aston Villa news, the club are reportedly hopeful of striking a deal for this France youth international.
