Aston Villa fans on Twitter couldn’t believe their eyes after it was announced on Tuesday that Joleon Lescott had joined Sunderland.
The 34-year-old centre-back was one of the most criticised Villa players in a campaign which saw the Midlands giants pick up just 17 points from their 38 Premier League matches.
Many felt that his performances on the pitch weren’t good enough for their side, while he was also involved in controversial incidents off the field.
The player Tweeted a picture of a car on his personal account following a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool at Villa Park, while he also described the club’s relegation as a “weight off the shoulders.”
He soon left for Greek side AEK Athens in the summer, but an injury saw his contract terminated in November after just three months at the club.
Now, on Tuesday afternoon it was announced by the struggling Black Cats that they had signed Lescott until the end of the season.

Sunderland are currently sat at the bottom of the Premier League table with three points separating them from safety.
They will be hoping for a more impressive second half of the season, but with funds short in supply for David Moyes it is looking increasingly more difficult.
