By Harvey Byrne

It was announced on Friday afternoon that Gary Gardner had extended his stay at Villa Park – and Aston Villa fans on Twitter were delighted for their youth graduate.

The Midlands giants revealed on the club’s official website that the 24-year-old midfielder had agreed a new four-year contract with the team.

Gardner has been key to the Steve Bruce’s midfield this season, featuring in 15 encounters in all competitions.

His only goal of the season and his first ever for Villa came this season and it will have been a memorable one, as slotted past fierce rivals Birmingham in the Midlands derby in October.

Villa fans were delighted to have prolonged the stay of one of their academy graduates on social media with many keen to see him progress with the club.

Gary followed his brother Craig through the Villa youth team, making his debut in a 3-1 Premier League victory over Chelsea in 2011.

He has made 33 appearances for the club in total with loans at Coventry, Sheffield Wednesday, Brighton and Nottingham Forest earlier in his career.

He will now turn his attentions to helping the Midlands club as they seek promotion back to the Premier League.
