Aston Villa fans react on Twitter to reported interest in Premier League star

By Emma Sanders

Aston Villa fans have reacted on Twitter with mixed views after it was reported that the club could sign former winger Stewart Downing.

According to the Birmingham Mail, Steve Bruce is interested in bringing 32-year-old Downing in on a loan deal until the end of the season after it was revealed Middlesbrough are prepared to let him leave temporarily.

Some fans are pleased to see the club linked with a proven Premier League player but others are frustrated that they are looking to bring in former players when they could be targeting more permanent, long-term options.

Downing did well for the club when he joined in 2009 and earned a call up to the England squad but many fans were left feeling bitter after he completed a £20million move to Liverpool in 2011.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Downing has made 19 appearances for Middlesbrough this season but has started just 11 games in the Premier League and he has become a bit-part player in the side.

He craves regular first-team action and a return to his former club would certainly not be a bad idea given Aston Villa’s need to improve squad depth.

Bruce needs to add quality to the side as they search for a place in the Championship play-offs and Downing has proved he can be effective in the top two tiers of English football.

In other Aston Villa news, Bruce has delivered this verdict on Johnstone’s debut.
