Aston Villa fans slammed Sam Johnstone in the 4-1 win against Wolves at Villa Park on Saturday after they saw the goalkeeper as being as fault for Diogo Jota’s first-half goal.

Johnstone, 24, has been in top form at Villa while on loan from Manchester United and many supporters want the former England Under-21 international signed up on a permanent deal once his 18-months in the West Midlands comes to an end.

But there may have been some reservations about the shot-stopper on Saturday evening when his blunder led to Wolves levelling the scores in the 20th minute.

Albert Adomah put Villa ahead in the eight minute before Jota’s equaliser.

Luckily for Johnstone, the away side’s goal had little impact on the overall result as a second-half blitz saw James Chester, Lewis Grabban and Birkir Bjarnson put a serious dent in Wolves’ hopes of running away with the Championship title.

During the game, there was criticism levelled at Johnstone for his performance, with one fan claiming that the goalkeeper is “overrated”.

Here is a selection of their tweets:

Johnstone has made 36 appearances in all competitions for Aston Villa this season, playing every single minute of Championship football.

He has kept an impressive 15 clean sheets in the process.

In other Aston Villa news, it has been confirmed that a Dutch goalkeeper has jetted into the UK after reaching an agreement with Villa.
