‘Aston Villa fans won’t be happy’ after points deduction latest
Aston Villa are staring down the barrel of potential sanctions for overspending yet again this summer despite their strong showing in the Champions League.
Finance expert Stefan Borson has told Football Insider (11 May) that Villa could be set to make another big sale as they are facing Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) issues again this season.
Douglas Luiz, Tim Iroegbunam and Omari Kellyman all moved on before last year’s accounting deadline – while Jhon Duran left for the Saudi Pro League earlier this year.
Under the PSR rules, top-flight clubs are only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period – with points deductions potentially on the table for clubs who don’t comply.
Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted his old side will have to sell a fan favourite as that is where the value is in the squad.
Aston Villa fans will forgive Emery, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted Villa fans won’t be happy – but will be content to forgive Unai Emery as he has shown competency in the market.
The Midlands giants sit sixth in the table with Champions League qualification up for grabs ahead of their final two games against Tottenham and Man United.
Position | Team | Played | Points | GD |
3 | Newcastle United | 36 | 66 | 23 |
4 | Manchester City | 36 | 65 | 24 |
5 | Chelsea | 36 | 63 | 19 |
6 | Aston Villa | 36 | 63 | 7 |
7 | Nottingham Forest | 36 | 62 | 12 |
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “The issue with PSR is not surprising.
“They’ve been sailing close to the wind.
“It’s only been the cleverness of Monchi and the recruitment team which have got them out of trouble so far.
“They’re going to have to do it again.
“It may be a player sold that the Villa fans are not happy about. That’s where the value will be.
“When you look at what Emery has done with squad strengthening, the fans will forgive him and allow him to get the resources to go ahead in the market – and meet PSR.”

Arsenal plan to reignite Watkins move
Ollie Watkins could be one Aston Villa star set to depart in the upcoming summer window.
Football Insider revealed on 2 May that Arsenal are planning to reignite their bid to sign Watkins this summer.
Villa knocked back a £50million offer from the London giants for their star striker, 29, in the January transfer window.
