Aston Villa in five-way chase for Premier League goalkeeper (not Johnstone) - report

By Will Butcher

Aston Villa are one of five clubs chasing Hull City goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic, according to a report.

Sky Sports claim that Villa are set to rival Premier League quartet Watford, Leicester, Sunderland and Crystal Palace for the signature of the Switzerland international.

It is believed that the 32-year-old’s current contract situation at the KCOM Stadium has attracted interest in his services, with only a year left to go on his Hull deal.

That could see him leave this summer as Hull look to avoid losing the former Lokomotiv Moscow goalkeeper on a free transfer when his contract ends.

The goalkeeper has proved instrumental in Marco Silva’s side after the Portuguese manager took over at Hull in January, as the Tigers continue to draw towards Premier League safety.

Villa’s number one is currently Sam Johnstone who is on loan from Man United, but it remains to be seen if he has done enough to earn a permanent deal at Villa Park, or if United would extend his time at the club.

With Mark Bunn’s contract set to expire in just over two months and Pierluigi Gollini’s Villa future in doubt after being loaned out to Atalanta, Steve Bruce could look to sign Jakupovic to solve his problem area between the sticks.

Football Insider verdict:

Bruce must look to bring proven Premier League talent to Villa Park in the summer, as the Midlands giants look to mount a title challenge next season after failing to gain an instant return to the top flight. That experience in England’s top flight will help Villa in gaining promotion and then staying in the Premier League, should Bruce win his fifth career promotion. Signing Jakupovic would be a huge coup for the Midlands giants – especially as he is attracting Premier League interest.  Will he want to drop down a league after a fine season for Hull? That’s the real question, and it’s a problem Bruce is going to have to content with a lot over the summer.
