Ron Saunders broke Aston Villa’s transfer record to sign Peter Withe for £500,000 from Newcastle in 1980 – and what an inspired decision it was.
Withe scored the winning goal in the 1982 European Cup final win against Bayern Munich and wrote himself into Villa history.
It wasn’t like that was his only goal for Villa though as the England international netted 74 goals in 182 appearances during his five-year stint at Villa Park.
