Aston Villa have ‘discussed’ extraordinary points deduction plan – Kieran Maguire
Aston Villa should not take the extraordinary measure of accepting a Premier League points deduction next season in order to keep hold of a star player.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that it would be “very risky” for any club to accept a PSR breach to avoid player sales.
Villa are on the brink of breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules after recording losses of £120million in their 2022-23 accounts.
As revealed by Football Insider, Villa are gearing up for a summer firesale in order to balance their books and avoid a breach.
Villa could theoretically accept the breach and a points deduction solely to keep hold of a star player over the summer window, but Maguire explained that such an “extreme” plan could backfire.
Aston Villa keeping star players is not worth points deduction – Kieran Maguire
“You can see directors of football in theory saying to themselves that it would be worth taking a points deduction to hold onto a player,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“From what I know, that has certainly been discussed in regards to Aston Villa’s situation.
“They could argue that a player is worth eight points to the club and a PSR breach would only receive a penalty of four to five.
“But it is a very, very risky move for a club to take as any player could receive an injury in the first game of the season.

“That would leave the club with the downsides of costs with no upside in terms of performances.
“So certainly it’s an extreme strategy and one only to be taken if clubs are desperate.“
