Aston Villa have signed ‘world’s best’ after ‘massive’ deal agreed last year – Wyness
Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Aston Villa transfer guru Monchi is the “best in the world” in his role.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted his old side are “prepared” for Champions League football in the 2024-25 campaign.
Monchi only became president of football operations at Aston Villa in June 2023 and helped the club achieve a top-four finish in his first season at the club.
The transfer expert oversaw the arrivals of stars like Moussa Diaby and Pau Torres last summer (2023) – with both players proving valuable additions for Unai Emery.
He was sporting director at Sevilla during their period of dominance in the Europa League – an omen which bodes well for Aston Villa’s first Champions League campaign since the 1982-83 season.
Aston Villa transfer expert Monchi is ‘best in the world’, says Wyness
Wyness insisted Monchi and Emery will prove a “potent mix” for the Midlands giants.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Monchi, the sporting director, hasn’t got enough praise for what he’s done.
“He’s probably the best sporting director in the world – or at least that I’m aware of.
“He’s got massive European experience with Sevilla and has worked wonders with them in the past.
“It’s going to be an interesting next season for Villa. I think they’re prepared, and they have the right knowledge in the right areas.

“Having Monchi and Unai Emery together is a potent mix and having these people in place are giving the club momentum.
“They are another club who will be really chasing hard next season.”
