Aston Villa have ‘upset’ rivals as Steven Gerrard hits back over controversial comments – pundit

Paul Robinson is baffled as to why Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch publicly criticised Aston Villa for their tactics on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League goalkeeper said Steven Gerrard’s side knew that such methods would “upset” the hosts at Elland Road.

Villa failed to break down a Leeds side that played with 10 men for the majority of the second half on Sunday (2 October).

Speaking to the BBC (2 October), Marsch said he “felt sorry for the fans” after the game.

The 48-year-old pointed the finger at Villa’s approach at Elland Road.

Gerrard rejected the criticism and suggested it was in fact Leeds who were time-wasting during the game.

When asked by Football Insider for his reaction to the comments, Robinson said: “Aston Villa know it upsets them.

“It is not against the rules of the game. It is called game management.

“The fact that Jesse Marsch has come out and highlighted it shows that it riled Leeds. I’m sure whoever is going to Leeds next will have a good idea of what to do.

“For Marsch to show his hand after the game… You cannot tell me that other managers have not watched that. They are all going to play that way against Leeds next year. Marsch has shown his hand.

“I understand that he is fed up of teams stifling how he wants to play but that is what it is like in the Premier League.”
