Aston Villa hit by £200m blow – Stefan Borson
Aston Villa will increase their revenue next season but their near-£200million wage bill could also soar with Champions League contract clauses.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Villa’s wage bill could rise as much as 10 per cent for the 2024-25 campaign.
Unai Emery’s side finished fourth in the Premier League to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Villa president of business Chris Heck has described the club’s plan to increase revenue to £400million by 2027.
Villa generated £217million of revenue in their latest 2022-23 accounts and had a wage bill of £194million.
Borson believes Villa’s wage bill is set to soar with several players triggering a contract clause for a wage increase next season.
Champions League clauses to inflate £194m Aston Villa wages
“Villa are set to increase their revenue, but that also comes with increased costs,” Borson told Football Insider.
“First of all, they probably had to pay quite substantial bonuses to the squad for Champions League qualification this year which could easily offset a big chunk of next year’s gain.
“On top of that, a number of players have got Champions League wage increases in their contracts.
“That could add maybe 10 per cent to the overall wage bill.

“So Villa can continue to increase their revenue up to that £400m target if they can progressively get further in the Champions League.
“But the other thing is that this revenue could be going straight back out the door.“
