Aston Villa news: Keith Wyness ‘amazed’ by ‘very sad’ PSR development
Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed he was “amazed” to see the club’s proposed changes to Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) voted down.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs –insisted it is “very sad” to see top-flight clubs “voting politically”.
Aston Villa proposed that the allowable loss limit under PSR should be increased to £135million for the 2024-25 season, but Premier League clubs voted the plans down last week.
Current regulations state that clubs cannot exceed losses of £105million over three years.
Football Insider has since revealed (7 June) that Aston Villa must raise £60million in player sales this summer to avoid potential punishment.
Aston Villa PSR rejection is ‘amazing’, says Wyness
Wyness claimed Villa’s proposals would’ve been a “move in the right direction”.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I didn’t think it was going to be rejected, to be honest.
“£135m up from £105m would’ve been a small move, but a move in the right direction.
“I’d rather have seen an inflation-adjusted amount.
“I was amazed that the clubs didn’t go for it, and I’m now worried they’re voting politically to block other clubs – rather than thinking about the best thing for everybody.
“It was very rare to see that in my day.

“It would’ve made sense, and I don’t understand why it was voted down.
“All I can think of is political voting, and that’s very sad. I wasn’t in the room, but I thought this change made common sense.”
