Aston Villa news: Pundit fears Leon Bailey could get 'in trouble' as controversy analysed

Paul Robinson has suggested Man United defender Lisandro Martinez was not penalised for elbowing Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey because of change in officiating style.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one claimed “a more lenient view” has been taken by referees in the 2022-23 campaign.

As shown on journalist Ashley Preece’s Twitter (7 November), Martinez threw a couple of elbows towards Bailey’s stomach in the second half of Man United’s 3-1 loss at Aston Villa.

The Man United centre-back escaped punishment after the officials deemed the coming together as not worthy of a foul.

Bailey took to Twitter after the game (7 November) to criticise the officials for failing to spot or punish Martinez’s actions.

The Villa winger said he “couldn’t breathe” after the coming together but was told by the linesman not to complain.

When asked by Football Insider if Bailey was right to publicly criticise the officials for their performance, Robinson said: “You can get yourself in trouble with your comments on social media.

“Quite often you are best not saying anything. In this instance, I understand why Bailey is frustrated. Martinez overstepped the line.

“However, I am in favour of the referees taking a more lenient view in general. It is a contact sport and this season the referees are letting a lot more go.

“I think the vast majority of vans are enjoying that way of refereeing in all honesty.”
