Aston Villa player ratings v Preston: Senior player is 3/10

By Amir Mir

Football Insider rates the Aston Villa players out of ten after they recorded a 2-2 draw against Preston on Saturday afternoon.

Sam Johnstone 6 – The on-loan Manchester United goalkeeper couldn’t do much about Preston’s goals, in particular, Hugill’s first strike. After a quiet first half, when the away team levelled the scores, he made some valuable saves.

Alan Hutton 7 – Magnificent first half display as the right-back linked up well with Adomah on the right-hand side. Tailed off towards the end to his and his team’s disappointment.

James Chester 7 – Despite his team conceding two goals it was another very good performance from the Welshman. Had it not been for him, Hugill would have netted a hat-trick.

Nathan Baker 6 – Will be disappointed to have conceded two goals, should have dealt with the Preston pressure in the second half a lot better.

Jordan Amavi 6 – Looked energetic in the first period but once again needs to improve the defensive side of his game. The Frenchman requires more consistency.

Henri Lansbury 7 – A brilliant debut from the new signing and exactly what Villa require. He played the some positive passes for the Villa attackers and constantly crossed the ball into the box. Great start.

Ashley Westwood 4 – Simple game, provided nothing in attack or defence. The senior player is a problem for this team.

Albert Adomah 7 – Two deserved goals for the winger, despite his team letting a two-goal lead slip. He was brilliant on the wing for Villa and is becoming one of their key attacking performers.

Jack Grealish 6 – Started the game well in the first half, threaded some very good balls forward, but went missing after the break. Needs to be more consistent.

Andre Green 7 – Bruce gave the youngster his first league start and despite Villa throwing away all three points, he looked energetic and creative. Green must start the next game.

Gabby Agbonlahor 3 – Don’t see the point of Bruce selecting the senior player. He has failed to score a goal this season and does not look any closer to finding the back of the net. He may have put in a shift today, but that is the least a supporter expects, no goal, no threat, needs to be dropped. Simple.

SUBS:

Gary Gardner 5 – (For Amavi, 88mins)
