Aston Villa plot second midfielder deal as Ross Barkley talks advance – sources

Aston Villa’s expected signing of Ross Barkley could trigger a high-profile midfield sale in the summer transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Villa recorded a huge loss of £119.6million in their accounts for the 2022-23 campaign, sparking fears over a potential Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) breach.

It is believed Unai Emery’s side could be forced to sell one or more first-team stars this summer to avoid a potential sanction – despite securing Champions League football for the 2024-25 season.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on Saturday morning (18 May) that Villa have opened talks to re-sign Barkley after Emery gave the deal the green light.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that the former England international “ticks a lot of boxes” for the Midlands giants – who appreciate his experience and previous time at Villa Park.

However, it is believed Barkley could be coming in ahead of a high-profile sale to provide cover in the 2024-25 campaign.

Villa already have Youri Tielemans, Douglas Luiz, Jacob Ramsey, John McGinn and Boubacar Kamara on the books in central midfield.

Tim Iroegbunam is also under contract at Villa Park, while Philippe Coutinho and Leander Dendoncker will return this summer after overseas loans.

Barkley, who was relegated with Luton this term, notched five goals and six assists in 37 games across all competitions for Rob Edwards’ side.

He played 24 times for Aston Villa in the 2020-21 campaign after joining on loan from Chelsea, notching three goals and one assist.
