Aston Villa points deduction: Keith Wyness drops new verdict
Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed the club are now in the “safety zone” of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and are on course to avoid a points deduction.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the “system is broken and does nothing but protect the top clubs”.
Aston Villa completed four sales before the 30 June accounts deadline, with Douglas Luiz, Tim Iroegbunam, Omari Kellyman and Morgan Sanson all leaving the club.
Unai Emery’s side had been close to the PSR limit for 2023-24, with Premier League clubs only permitted to make a £105million loss over three years.
Everton and Nottingham Forest fell foul of the rules last season and were handed points deductions by the Premier League.
PSR ‘system is broken’ with Aston Villa set to avoid points deduction, says Wyness
Wyness claimed “everyone is waking up to the fact that this system is broken” after Villa owner Nassef Sawiris threatened legal action against the English top flight.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The way I’ve been counting it, and with the detail coming through about the ins and outs, I reckon they are about £46million in the positive.
“That should be about enough to put them in the safety zone.
“Next year will be a whole different kettle of fish with Champions League revenue coming in.
“Hopefully that will give them the power to strengthen, but it will always be a battle under the current rules.
“We’ve heard from Edens and Sawiris about how the current system isn’t adequate, and Sawiris has been talking about potentially suing the Premier League.

“Everyone is waking up to the fact that this system is broken, and does nothing but protect the top clubs.
“It’s just wrong, and needs to be re-thought quickly.”
